On rencontre ce nom dans le Morbihan, mais c'est en Picardie (Aisne) et en Belgique qu'il a toujours été le plus présent. Son sens est incertain, d'autant que les variantes sont nombreuses : Labyois, Labyoit, Labilloy, Labio, Labiois, Labios, Labiod, Labioit, Labiwez, Labiwoit. Difficile dans ces conditions de savoir quelle est la forme la plus ancienne. Debrabandere propose celui qui est originaire de Labiwé, lieu situé à Baulers (commune de Nivelles), en Brabant Wallon. J'aurais pour ma part tendance à pencher vers celui qui habitait un lieu-dit "l'Abbaye", sachant que ce mot s'est souvent écrit "abbie, abby" (nombreux exemples dans le Pas-de-Calais). On peut aussi se dire que des formes telles que Labiois et Labyois ne sont pas très éloignées de Lobjois (voir ce nom), qui désigne un Albigeois.
